Eastern in the Friends of Bookshare Community Room.

The Horror Book Club hopes you're ready to eat a healthy helping of horrific
literature for this month's meeting.

For your consumption, we offer not one, but two literary courses. Try one or
the other, or, if you are able, enjoy both dishes of darkness. If you have a
weakness for novels, try Jack Ketchum's She Wakes, available from Bookshare
at the following link:

http://www.bookshare.org/web/SingleTitle.html?submittitleid=36327

If your preference is to eat a la carte, you will enjoy Jack Ketchum's
Peaceable Kingdom, a collection of short fiction, which can be found at:

http://www.bookshare.org/web/SingleTitle.html?submittitleid=36326

For dessert, ... if there's any room left, we'll share thoughts on recent
books or movies of interest, whether or not they fall inside the scope of
the horror genre.

The Horror Book Club meets the last Thursday of every month. This time
around, our meeting will take place on May 29, at 9:00 p.m. Eastern, 6:00
p.m. Pacific Time. To Join the book club discussion, which is hosted by the
Friends of Bookshare, go to the following link:

Creative Writing Club

Leader:  Jackie McBride , Email. abletec@gmail.com
Meets 1st, 3rd, & 4th Saturday, at 12:00 A.M. Eastern 9:00 A.M. Pacific Friends of Bookshare Class Room. All would-be writers are welcome.

Greetings to all:

On Saturday, June 21, at 9 a.m. Pacific, noon Eastern, the
Explorations in Creative Writing Group met in the friends of bookshare
classroom. I wish to extend heartfelt thanks to all who came, & an
equally heartfelt invitation to those who could not come to do so next
Saturday.

As is typical of most first meetings, some logistical matters were
dispensed with & the members' opinions were sought on a variety of
issues. Next, we had a discussion about the meaning of "writing what
you know", which led to a rather interesting side conversation
regarding the ability of congenitally blind persons to write
believably about visual details, & techniques that might be employed
to that end. A piece was shared by 1 of the group members & it was
discussed in light of the lesson on "writing what you know." A
differing opinion, e.g., that perhaps writing about what one does not
know might prove more educational & interesting, was proffered by a
member, quoting author David McCullough. All in all, it was an
interesting & productive session.

If you missed the first meeting, it doesn't mean you're banned forever
lol. It's understood not everyone will be able to make every meeting.
You're more than welcome to join us again next Saturday, 9:00 a.m.
Pacific, noon Eastern, in the friends of Bookshare classroom:
http://conference321.com/masteradmin/room.asp?id=rs0f1c528bd81b

One of the things that was decided was that curriculum would be shared
once monthly & then remaining Saturdays would be devoted primarily to
sharing of writing. We also decided not to meet officially on the 4th
of July weekend, as many will be away, though I'll probably be up if
anyone wants to hang out unofficially.

I have previously offered to help test/troubleshoot those having
microphone problems, that offer still stands, & text chat
participation is always welcome.

Chris Hofstader has also offered to put up a blog on his site in order
for us to post pieces for critique outside of the writing class. He
intends to have that up shortly. We appreciate his willingness to
contribute toward our efforts in this way.

The topics for the week are:
1) One stormy night
2) Something you threw away but wish you hadn't
3) A day in the life
4) A town
5) A child
6) Flowers
7) A holiday

Or anything else that strikes your fancy!
Please keep pieces to about 5 minutes in length or approximately 1000
words. You are welcome to send your work to me at
abletec@gmail.com
prior to the meeting to be put into the browser, but try to have these
by Friday night, as stuff tends to get hectic on Saturday mornings.

An archive of the meeting will be posted on the site for your
listening pleasure as soon as:
a) I determine the procedure for getting it to Jim; &
b) He has the time to do that.

Have fun with your writing this week & hope to see you Saturday! Any
questions may be addressed to me either on the lists or privately at:
abletec@gmail.com

Teens Book Club

Leader:   Don Horn, Email. broadwaydon@optonline.net
Next meeting: Saturday, November 17, at 6:00 P.M. Eastern 3:00 Pacific in the Friends of Bookshare Community Room.

The first meeting of the Teen Book Club was held on Thursday night. Although only one teen attended, interested adults were also there to cheer on the maiden voyage.  This led to a productive discussion about book selection and marketing the club.

With regard to book selection, some felt that the books chosen should be recreational while others expressed the view that the club could deal with literary classics.  People pointed out that libraries and bookstores could be contacted to determine what young people were borrowing, buying and enjoying.  Bookshare also has a section specifically geared to young adult literature and a list of teacher recommended reading.

People also shared their thoughts about marketing.  Gaining a presence on social networking sites such as Myspace and Facebook, posting a carefully crafted press release to various lists and encouraging teens to share information ABOUT THE CLUB IN SCHOOL AND AT OTHER EVENTS THEY ATTEND WERE SOME OF THE IDEAS MENTIONED.

The next meeting will be Friday, July 18, 2008 at 9:00 PM Eastern 6:00 P.M. Pacific and Saturday  GMT 02:00. in the Friends of Bookshare Community Room.

The Romance Book Club discussed Snow in April by Rosamunde Pilcher at its June 20th meeting. Two recommendations were given as choices for July. When Lightning Strikes, by Kristin Hannah,  was chosen as the selection to read at the July meeting.

Recommendations Suggested:

1. When Lightning Strikes by Kristin Hannah
345 pages
Available on Bookshare and from NLS, as RC 046462

Synopsis:

Romance writer Alaina Costanza has given up on dreams and fairy tales. Then, one stormy night, she is suddenly plunged back in time to the wild, Western world of her newest novel. Disoriented and disbelieving, she is kidnapped by her own character, a ruthless outlaw known only as Killian. But this "dream" is all too real. Once wisecracking and invincible, Alaina is now a mother desperate to return to the child she left behind-one hundred years in the future. Yet Alaina and Killian will discover a love too magnificent to last a single lifetime. But for the sake of Alaina's child, they must risk it all and fight for a future that depends on lightning striking ... twice.

2. Legend by Jude Deveraux
Available on Bookshare and from NLS, as RC 43560
 345 pages

Synopsis:

Kady Long, a celebrated chef about to be married to a gorgeous man, felt she was the luckiest woman alive. But, when she opened an antique flour tin and discovered a charming old photo of four strangers, she felt a mysterious empathy...and an irresistible desire to try on the delicate satin wedding dress, amethyst earrings, and gossamer veil that were tucked inside. Stranger still was the dizzy spell that came over her.... When she opened her eyes, Kady found herself in the 19th century.

Grace has a list of books receiving Rita awards from the Romance Writers of America which she will be glad to mail to anyone who wishes a copy of it and has marked those books available on Bookshare. Please let us know if there is anything on that list which appeals to you as a possibility for future reading. AS always, we welcome your suggestions. We will gather again on July 18, 2008. Until then, happy reading!
